Discovering a Hidden Gem: Google Gemini on iPhone
Google’s Gemini, an AI chatbot, has been available on iPhones for months now, but it’s tucked away in the main Google app, making it less accessible. While Android users enjoy a dedicated app experience, iPhone users have to navigate through the Google app to use Gemini. But worry not, as a simple solution has been found!
Creating a Shortcut to Gemini on Your iPhone Homescreen
Matt Sephton, a game developer at Playdate, found a way to launch Gemini directly from the iPhone homescreen or using the Action Button on the iPhone 15 Pro series. Here’s how you can do it:
- Open the Shortcuts app on your iPhone.
- Tap the “+” button in the top right corner to create a new shortcut.
- Find the “Open URLs” option in the “Actions” menu by typing “open URLs” into the search bar.
- Type “googleapp://robin” in the URL field, which is the direct link to open Gemini.
Personalising Your Gemini Shortcut
You can rename the shortcut from its default “Open URLs” to “Gemini” or any other name you prefer. You can also customise the icon. For this example, we used a blue colour and the “sparkle” emoji that Gemini and other AI tools have adopted. When adding the icon to your homescreen, you can use any image you like.
If you have an iPhone 15 Pro, you can assign this shortcut to the Action Button. Go to Settings > Action Button > Shortcut and select the “Gemini” shortcut you just created. With this, a long-press of the Action Button opens Gemini in the Google app.
Potential for a Dedicated Gemini App on iOS
While it’s possible that Google may eventually release a dedicated Gemini app for iOS, this quick and easy workaround allows you to access Gemini with ease in the meantime.
