Alibaba’s Global Cloud Expansion

Alibaba, the Chinese tech giant, is expanding its cloud computing services globally, with a focus on artificial intelligence (AI) to fuel growth. The company recently expanded its availability zones to Mexico for the first time and plans to build new data centers in Malaysia, Thailand, and South Korea over the next three years.

Overcoming Challenges and Betting on AI

After a turbulent period that saw Alibaba Cloud scrap its planned initial public offering and undergo a management reshuffle, the company is now looking to reignite momentum. Selina Yuan, President of Alibaba Cloud’s international division, said they will invest more in international data centers and emphasise AI products to attract customers.

A Stronghold in Asia

While Alibaba Cloud holds just under 5% of the global cloud market share, it dominates the Chinese market with a 39% share. In Asia, Alibaba is one of the top players, aiming to challenge US tech giants like Amazon, Microsoft, and Google.

AI-Driven Partnerships and Products

To boost growth, Alibaba is focusing on AI products and signing up more customers. The company recently expanded its partnership with French luxury house LVMH, which now uses Alibaba’s AI tools in China. In 2023, Alibaba launched Tongyi Qianwen, its large language model (LLM), and later rolled out an advanced version to keep pace with competitors like Baidu, Tencent, Microsoft, OpenAI, and Google.

“We think is really the good time for the Alibaba cloud. We have cloud computing…we have our very clear strategy. We have our large language model, and I think we can do more for the business, for our customer and partners.” Selina Yuan, President of Alibaba Cloud’s international division

Embracing AI for a Brighter Future

As Alibaba continues to invest in AI and cloud computing, it seeks to strengthen its position in Asia and challenge dominant US tech giants. With new data centers, expanded availability zones, and a focus on AI-driven partnerships and products, Alibaba is poised to make its mark in the global AI landscape.
