Microsoft's Copilot: Your Handy AI Companion Across Windows, Edge, Office, and Bing

Microsoft's Copilot hailed as your "everyday AI companion," seamlessly integrates into your workflow across Windows, Edge, Office apps, and Bing. But what exactly does it do? And how can you unleash your AI productivity with Microsoft Copilot?

Understanding Copilot:

Think of Copilot as a conversational AI interface at your beck and call. It answers your questions, generates text like emails and summaries, and even conjures images based on your prompts.

Want to summarise a memo in two sentences? Copilot condenses it in a flash.,Feeling uninspired for an email? Copilot crafts a draft for you.,Need a unique image for your presentation? Copilot paints it with words.,Even coding gets a boost, with Copilot writing code in popular languages like JavaScript, C, and Python.

Evolution in Action:

Remember, Copilot is a young and dynamic entity. Its functionalities, capabilities, and even its name (replacing Bing Chat as of late 2023) are constantly evolving. Interfaces and components, like the web interface's Notepad feature, might disappear or change, reflecting its ongoing development. But the core purpose – to empower you with AI magic – remains constant. 1. Copilot Sidebar in Windows:

Control your PC directly! Change to dark mode, adjust volume, or activate Do Not Disturb. Summarize highlighted text on your desktop. Open app functionality will return in future updates. New PCs even boast a Copilot keyboard key for quick access.

  1. Copilot in Bing Search & Mobile App:

Switch between AI and regular search seamlessly. Scroll up/down to toggle between results.

  1. Copilot Sidebar in Edge Browser:

Dedicated buttons for text interactions and image creation with Microsoft Designer.

  1. Copilot Mobile Apps (Android & iOS):

Toggle between GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 AI models based on your preference.

  1. Microsoft 365 Apps (Paid Subscription):

Tap into the power of Copilot directly in Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, OneNote, and Teams (business subscription required for Teams). Businesses can customize Copilot's responses with their own data, allowing you to query information from your documents, emails, and Teams chats. This integration showcases how executives tread carefully on generative AI adoption while still exploring its benefits.

Free or Paid?

Copilot shines as a free companion on the web, Windows, Edge, and mobile apps. Additionally, premium features like using it within Microsoft 365 apps, leveraging your own data, and accessing faster models and image generation require a Copilot Pro subscription. The integration of Copilot directly into Windows, especially with the dedicated keyboard key on new PCs, raises interesting considerations for digital inclusion policies in ASEAN. Ensuring equitable access and understanding of these AI tools, regardless of device vintage or internet infrastructure, will be key to broader adoption beyond urban centers. We're looking at frameworks for responsible AI deployment that factor in these hardware-level integrations.

that desktop control from the sidebar is a bit worrying. for financial institutions, giving an AI direct access to system settings or even summarising sensitive highlighted text raises serious data governance and compliance issues in Hong Kong. not sure the upside outweighs the risk there.
