The point about individuals creating their own "fiefdoms" with unsanctioned tools, I get that. But in a Malaysian telco context, often the issue isn't so much autonomy as it is legacy systems not integrating, or quick fixes needed for very specific local market challenges. Sometimes that "shadow AI" is just folks trying to solve a problem that official tools can't handle with our unique data sets.

hey everyone, new to the whole shadow AI thing but this article got me thinking. when it talks about inaccurate results from free or outdated tools, does that also apply to, like, open-source models that people might be using without corporate oversight? can those really mess things up that badly?

@arjunm: the whole "shadow AI" thing is actually getting a bit crazy in some places. we've seen instances where teams just spun up open-source LLMs on un-patched servers. it's not even about "autonomy" sometimes, just laziness or not understanding the infra risks.

The point about "fiefdoms" and the human desire for autonomy really resonates from a policy perspective. We see this even in government agencies here in Malaysia and across ASEAN. While the intent is often to innovate or solve problems quickly, unsanctioned AI use undermines our efforts for a unified national AI strategy. It makes it very difficult to ensure adherence to data governance frameworks, like those outlined in our digital economy blueprints, if tools are being implemented outside of established protocols.
